Taj Calligraphy is the artistic vision of Tagalsir Hasan (Taj), a renowned Sudanese calligrapher and graphic designer celebrated for his ability to merge traditional Arabic calligraphy with contemporary design. With over four decades of expertise, Taj has shaped the calligraphy and design landscape in the UAE and beyond.
Born with a passion for Arabic script, Taj earned his Bachelor of Arts from the College of Fine and Applied Arts in Khartoum (1977) and later obtained a Master’s degree in Graphic Design from the Central School of Art and Design in London (1983). His deep knowledge and refined artistic techniques have positioned him among the most respected calligraphers in the Arab world.
Since 1989, Taj has been based in the United Arab Emirates, where he has contributed significantly to the country's cultural and artistic development. He currently serves as an Editor at the Directorate of Culture in Sharjah, following his impactful roles as a Publications Designer at the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Community Development in Dubai, and an Artistic Director at the Ministry of Education, UAE. His expertise has also been instrumental at Al Bayan Printing and Publishing in Dubai.
Taj is a founding member and former editor of Hroof Arabiya magazine, a leading publication dedicated to Arabic calligraphy. He has served as a judge for fine arts and calligraphy competitions across the UAE and GCC, reinforcing his influence as a mentor and expert in the field.
His artistic journey has taken him to prestigious exhibitions worldwide, starting with his first solo exhibition at Hilton Dubai in 1998. His work has been displayed at renowned venues like the Abu Dhabi National Theatre, the University of Sharjah, and several others. Taj's exceptional craftsmanship has earned him 17 prestigious awards in Arabic calligraphy competitions, including top honors in Turkey and Sharjah.
Through Taj Calligraphy, his work continues to inspire new generations of artists, bridging the past and the future with exquisite Arabic letterforms that celebrate both heritage and modernity.
